You get desensitized

on his phone
he shared some pictures –
said it’s what his
people do. though he wasn’t
being racial;
he just meant

various photos, taken
mostly from car crashes;
housefires, factory
incidents, the occasional
you get
desensitised, he told me,

pulling eggs
from his breakfast
burrito. 2am; bars closed,
and we’d been drunk by then
since 6. a bright guy
quite funny, quite close
with my fiancée
and, given his profession,
clearly a good man.

brains across the highways
from a pile-up with a biker
like distasteful
grey and salted
scrambled eggs.
