Author(s) : Paul Tanner,
poetry, issue-four

mopping the aisles at 5 am

you look out of the shop window
and see her:

standing there
perfectly still
in the middle of the car park

in the pouring rain

2 white bloodshot eyes staring out
from under a mess of black hair

only her grey lips muttering

in the spotlight of a flickering lamppost

a bag with your shop’s logo
in one hand
and a soggy receipt
wafting in the other

in about an hour
you have to
let her in
