Music with tendons

Author(s) : DS Maolalai,
poetry, issue-four

a saxophone opens
the flat’s kitchen
door. a trumpeting
wail; the sound of police cars
striking cats
in the snow
and a current
of unfaithful
women. true jazz – music
with tendons
and shoulder-blades.
I look up
at my girlfriend
and ask her
who’s playing –
I like it. it’s a playlist
she tells me. it’s Songs
for Relaxing
Nights In.

DS Maolalai has been nominated eight times for Best of the Net and four times for the Pushcart Prize. His poetry has been released in two collections, “Love is Breaking Plates in the Garden” (Encircle Press, 2016) and “Sad Havoc Among the Birds” (Turas Press, 2019).
